主讲人介绍

Alexander Bobenko is a mathematics professor at the Technical University of Berlin in Germany. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematical physics in 1895 from the Steklov Mathematical Institute in St. Petersburg. His research interests include geometry, mathematical physics, and their applications, particularly discrete differential geometry, integrable systems, Riemann surfaces, and geometry processing. He was the director of the DFG Collaborative Center "Discretization in Geometry and Dynamics" and the DFG Research Unit "Polyhedral Surfaces" for many years. During his visit to Tsinghua University in April–May 2026, he taught a mini-course, "Discrete Conformality and Beyond," and gave many talks. The paper by Bobenko, Hoffmann, and Sageman-Furnas on solving the Bonnet problem received the 2026 Frontiers of Science Award.

讲座介绍

This lecture adopts an immersive format combining documentary screening and interactive discussion. It features the documentary Solving the Bonnet Problem, which focuses on a long-standing geometric puzzle proposed by Pierre Ossian-Bonnet.

Breaking the limitations of ordinary popular science content, the screening offers participants a rare, first-hand opportunity to witness the complete solving process of a sophisticated mathematical problem. The documentary faithfully records the collaborative efforts of three mathematicians, clearly presenting the missteps, pivotal breakthroughs and final achievements in their academic exploration, granting audiences an authentic glimpse into real mathematical research work.

Beyond the core problem-solving story, the documentary delves into the academic history and legendary scholars in the field. It sorts out Pierre Ossian-Bonnet’s academic career and outstanding contributions, while introducing the academic accomplishments of his contemporary, renowned mathematician Gaston Darboux. Meanwhile, the film comprehensively restores the academic atmosphere and developmental landscape of 19th-century French mathematics, guiding participants to go beyond simple problem-solving and appreciate the profound historical heritage and academic inheritance of mathematics.

To lower the threshold for understanding professional mathematical knowledge, the documentary adopts exquisite and vivid computer graphics. These visual tools progressively visualize and elaborate on abstract, intricate geometric concepts and complex mathematical logic, perfectly balancing academic professionalism and popular accessibility. This allows participants with diverse knowledge backgrounds to easily grasp the core ideas of the content.

After the screening, an interactive discussion session will be held. Participants are welcome to raise questions and exchange views on the documentary, related geometric problems and the history of mathematics, enabling everyone to fully explore the unique charm of geometry and mathematics.
